Lewis Shows World Form

WEST BERLIN, Reuter: Carl Lewis showed World Championship form on his return to Europe as he won the men’s 200 meters in ‘an impressive 20,09 seconds at the West Berlin athletics grand prix meeting.

Lewis had world champion and fellow American Calvin Smith on his shoulder coming. Off the bend but powered down the straight to win with ease.

Ironically, Lewis was racing in an event he will not enter at the World Championships which start in Rome in eight days’ time,

Lewis will defend the three world titles he won in 1983 the 100 meters, long jump and 4X100 meters relay but will not take part in the 200, the event he also won in Los Angeles a year later to take four Olympic gold.

Lewis was racing today in the Berlin Olympia Stadium where Jesse Owens won four gold in exactly the same events back in 1936.

Smith, who finished second, is running so well lately that he may well retain his world title in Rome now that the threat of Lewis is removed.

Earlier he won the 100 meters in ‘a more than useful 10.12 seconds.

Ed Moses gained revenge for his two defeats earlier this year by fellow American Danny Harris, which ended an unbeaten run of almost 10 years, in the men’s 400 meters hurdles.

Moses led throughout but seemed to be running out of steam in the run up to the last hurdle.
