NEW DELHI: The Soviet Union began their campaign in the 26th Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament with a hard fought 10 victory over Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) at the Shivaji stadium here on Nov 30th.

Pleshakov scored the all-important goal in pool “A” for the Soviet national side, preparing for the next world cup to be held in Pakistan next year.

Earlier, Indian Hockey Federation (Red) mauled IndoTibetan border police (ITBP) 41 (Ht 10) in a pool “C” match. Dhanraj Pillai struck twice while Edgar and Mohd. Arif contributed once each for the winners.

Kulwinder Singh scored the only goal for ITBP which had gone down to Mahindra and Mahindra Thursday.

In first match of the day, Namdhari XI held last year’s runners up rail coach factory, Kapurthala, 11 in the pool “D”. Sukhwinder scored for Namdhari whi Kirpal got the equaliser for RCF. (PTI).
