PEKING, Nov. 12, Reuter: A sudden snowstorm in Southern Tibet killed 18 people and 8,000 head of livestock, the official New China news agency reported on Thursday.

Herdsmen and their animals were still stranded in the area around xigaze and food, fuel and medicine have been rushed to the area, the agency said.

Foreign tourists travelling by road from the Tibetan capital of Lhasa to Nepal were blocked by heavy snowfalls last month and the Chinese authorities said some had to be rescued by helicopter. Thousands of herdsmen were also trapped.

The agency quoted a Lhasa official as saying all foreigners caught by the earlier snowfalls had been rescued.
