SINGAPORE, March 20, (Reuter): Police arrested 25 members of a Taiwan based Christian sect following an illegal demonstration last night, a police spokesman said today.
The demonstrators belong to the New Testament church which believes that the biblical Mount Zion is in the Southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung.
Witnesses said about 600 people had gathered to watch the sect members sing hymns and display placards with slogans such as “Tyranny shall end” and “Return me justice” before police moved in.
A Malaysian member of the sect, who identified herself as Miss Lim, told Reuters the group was protesting because the Singapore government wanted to deport Alex Koh, 22, a Malaysian studying at the National University of Singapore.
She said police raided Koh’s flat a few days ago and took away his student’s identity card.
