BUFFALO, March 17: Sikh Human Rights Day was observed at the State University of New York at Buffalo on March 17. The event was part of the Human Rights Week being observed by the National Lawyers Guild. Information tables and video presentations highlighted the human rights violations by the Indian government in the Sikh majority state of Punjab. A petition drive launched to promote HR 1067 Bill to deny India most favored nation trade status (contingent upon the human rights situation) elicited a very good response.

A lecture on “Human Rights Violations in India” was given by Mr. Balbir S. Brar, International Coordinator of Sikh Human Rights Group of North America. Mr. Brar spoke to a capacity crowd on specific cases of torture, extra judicial killings and disappearances of the Sikhs in the state of Punjab.

The event was sponsored by National Lawyers Guild, Punjabi Student Association, shur WATCH and Graduate Student Association of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
