Lahore: The Special Court, Punjab today commenced the trial of nine Sikhs including Gowinder Singh and others, accused of hijacking an Indian airliner into Pakistan territory in July 1984.

All the accused were produced before the court. They were provided with copies of statements of the prosecution witnesses and list of lawyers to appoint their defense counsel. The list included the names of Mr. S. M. Zafar, Khawaja Sultan Ahmed, Dr. Abdul Basit and Mr. Waseem Sajjad.

The court directed the accused to inform on the next date of hearing as to whom they had appointed as their defense counsel.

A case was registered against the accused at the South Cantonment Police Station, under Sections 402B and 149 of the PPC.
