OAKLAND, CA; Inderjit Singh was granted political asylum here on March 23, 1990. Born in Gazipur, Jalandhar he arrived at San Francisco airport on October 27, 1989 with his passport but a fake USA tourist visa. He was arrested by the INS and kept in Oakland Jail pending his request for political asylum.

His request for asylum form 1-589 was filed and the State Department’s Bureau of Human Relations informed the INS court that it has no knowledge about Inderjit Singh and it for the Judge to look at the evidence.

Inderjit Singh informed the Honorable Judge Bernard Horn Bach, presiding Judge Office of the Immigration Review that he was persecuted and repeatedly tortured in India.

Judge Horn Bach in his oral decision said “this is a classic case of persecution by government of India not only this is a political persecution because this respondent and his party seek independence from India but it is a religious persecution as well.”

The judge granted Inderjit Singh political asylum.

The trial attorney for the Immigration Service was Patricia Mayberry who based upon the testimony of Inderjit Singh which established a well-founded fear of persecution, told the Judge that the Immigration Service shall not appeal Judge’s decision which then becomes final and Inderjit Singh is a free man.

This is the 12th political asylum for a Sikh purported to be a member of AISSF handled by Mohinder Singh.
