CHANDIGARH: The Punjab CPI July 8th strongly criticized the replacement of Mr. O.P, Sharma as the Director-general of Police and described it as an “antinational act which will encourage the forces of militancy and violence in this sensitive border state.”

Addressing a press conference here, Dr, Joginder Dayal, Secretary of the CPI state council, said the government’s action in changing both the Chief Secretary and the DGP “lacked even the normal administrative decency.” The situation in Punjab was still fraught with danger. Antinational forces were active in Punjab as well as J and K. And they would remain active as long as India’s relations with Pakistan were not normal, Dr. Dayal alleged that the DGP’s transfer had been carried out by the Chief Minister for his narrow political interests after ignoring the national interests, That antinational, disruptive and separatist forces were still active in Punjab had been proved by the assassination of Mr. Beant Singh. Since then, the militant forces had been regrouping and enhancing their striking power. Pakistan, too, had been regularly training militants and sending its own nationals to Punjab to foment unrest here.
