NEW DELHI: Union Minister Suresh Pachouri, senior BJP leader Sikandar Bakht, former Haryana Chief Minister Benarasi Dass Gupta, and film Star tuned politician Shatraghan. Sinha were among the 19 candidates declared elected unopposed to the Raiya Sabha, while about 50 aspirants were left in the fray for the remaining 41 seals in nine states after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination its expired for the February 19 biennial election.

With this week’s results, the Congress claimed one seat each in Bihar and Haryana, two seats in Assam, three each in Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, taking its tally to 10 out of the 24 seats to be filled. While the BJP won one seat in Biharand two seats in Madhya Pradesh, four seats went to the Janata Dal and one to the CPI.

In another development, the Election Commission stayed the declaration of results in the biennial elections to the three seats in Rajasthan following complaints that money was used to prevent a contest.
