AMRITSAR: The SGPC has decided to take up repairs and renovation of the parkarma of the Golden Temple at a cost of Rs 5 lakh.

The money is to be raised by the Jathedar of Akal Takht, Mr. Darshan Singh and the SGPC Secretary Mr. Manjit Singh Calcutta.

Mr. Manjit Singh talking to PTI today said the renovation of the parkarma was part of the facelift program planned before the celebrations of the 400th year of the Golden Temple next month.

He said the SGPC had approached the secretary Local Government Punjab, the Director of the corridor project, and the Deputy Commissioner to review the plan as it had covered certain areas which were actually part of the original parkarma beautification scheme.

Not satisfied with the kar sewa at certain historic buildings in Punjab being undertaken by Sikh sants, the SGPC had decided to review the matter, Mr. Manjit Singh said.

It had sought information through its staff to find out progress of the kar seva, he said.

The SGPC was to find out whether such sants had been collecting money from gurdwaras by placing “golaks” there.

Mr. Manjit Singh said such instructions were issued last month after the SGPC Executive in a resolution took serious note of certain irregularities and “Misuse” of Gurdwara property by sants.

The SGPC had decided to demolish all temporary structures which had been constructed illegally on Gurdwara lands, he added.
