SRINAGAR: Kashmiri separatists killed the State Superintendent of Police in-charge of security at the Civil Secretariat in a sneak attack on Oct.21
While six other persons including security personnel were killed in renewed clashes between the rebels and security forces; two dozen university students received injuries when police lobbed teargas shells and fired in the air to disperse their demonstration. They were protesting against alleged custodial deaths.
Nazir Ahmed Bhat a senior State police official was killed by unidentified separatists while coming out of the Srinagar Medical College. Witnesses said militants fired at him from close range. He is the second senior local officer who fell to the bullets of the separatists in the past two days on Tuesday Joint Director of information Syed Ghulam B.Nabi was gunned down by unknown militants.
These killings come close on the heels of threats from Hizb-ul Mujahideen and Al-Jehad warning the two officers to desist from anti-movement activities.
Separatists fought a number of gun-battles at various places in Srinagar on Wednesday police said. Two civilians including a 16-year-old student Safeena Akhter were killed in retaliatory firing by the security forces in Iqbal Park area of Lal Chowk police and witnesses said. Hundreds of students of University of Kashmir and Regional Engineering College demonstrated against alleged custodial deaths in the valley. When they were marching towards a visiting United Nations military observer group they were lathi charged and finally police resorted to the bursting of teargas shells to disperse them.
Earlier the university teachers had demonstrated against human rights violations. Vice-Chancellor Hamdi Kashmiri who was heading the procession expressed deep concern over what he described as criminal silence by the UN international human rights organizations in general and the United Nations in particular over what he called the planned genocide.
Meanwhile the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen has described the proposed peace march on October 24 as a conspiracy aimed at maligning Pakistan and divide the Kashmiri people as also to weaken the Kashmir issue in the international for a. This was stated by Nasserrul Islam Amir of Jamiat here at a Press conference on Wednesday.
He asked the Pakistan government to stop the marchers and foil the international conspiracy. He said “If Pakistan stops the marchers their mentors would find a Cause to raise a hue and cry on Pakistan’s bonafides regarding Kashmir” and added that if the marchers were allowed to reach the LAC they would land in the tap of India.
