LUCKNOW: Janata Dal leader Sanjay Singh was Thursday officially declared elected to the upper house of parliament (Rajya Sabha) in a byelection.

The seat was vacated by Virendra Verma after he was appointed the governor of Punjab.

Singh shot into national headlines when he was charged with being a party to the murder of national badminton champion Syed Modi.

Singh, a nephew in law of Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh, who was then in the opposition, alleged that political vendetta had led to the charges against him.

He once again garnered headlines when he was critically injured in a shootout in the prestigious parliamentary constituency of Amethi last year. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was elected from Amethi.

He only recently returned from London where he had gone for treatment.

Jogender Singh (Ind), whose nomination papers had been rejected during scrutiny, was the only other candidate for the seat.
