GLEN ROCK, NJ: Leaders and luminaries of the tri state area gathered together at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara here on September 17 to pay their respects to the memory of S. Harchand Singh Grewal who had passed away two years ago on September 13, 1987 at his ancestral village Bhila in Dist. Ludhiana, Punjab, where he was getting a Gurdwara constructed at thi.t time.
S.Harchand Singh lived in the United States from 197683 to be with his sons who are prominent businessmen of the area. He went back to India but returned again. He was very involved in the social life of the Sikhs of the area and all the speakers at the memorial akhand path described how he was instrumental in building the Glen Rock gurdwara and in keeping unity in the community.
S.Harchand Singh is survived by his wife Mrs. Jagir Kaurand his sons S. Jarnail Singh Grewal, S. Kamikar Singh Grewal; S. Amarjit Grewal, S. Pritam Singh Grewal and S. Wazir Singh Grewal.
Speaking on the occasion, S. Pritpal Singh Khalsa the secretary of the gurdwara said S. Harchand Singh kept up the spirit of the community and had a keen interest in every aspect of building the Gurdwara.
Dr. Satwant Kaur Dhamoon president of the Sikh Women’s International Organization recalled how the 25 original families in the area were made to start the Gurdwara by S. Harchand Singh who was ‘an embodiment of the Sikh value system. He lead an exemplary life, she added.
- Jagjit Singh Mangat president of Sikh Cultural Society, NY spoke on the contribution of S. Harchand Singh to the Sikhs in NY and NJ. He paid rich tributes to S. Harchand Singh’s commitment to the Sikh cause and asked the congregation to keep contribution to the Sikh Defence Fund and to support the World Sikh News. “which is the only independent English weekly of the Sikhs in the world.”
- Tarlok Singh Sethi recalled various anecdotes which spoke of the worldly wisdom of S. Harchand Singh. S. Harbhajan Singh the President of Sikh Youth of New Jersey also paid tributes to the departed soul.
- Harchand Singh’s son S. Kamikar Singh Grewal who is also the president of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha thanked the congregation on behalf of the Grewal family. The diwan was held in a new hall which is being constructed because of the large number of people who attended the function.
