NEW DELHI: The Police lathicharged more than 3,000 people at Munje Chowk, (Pahargani) when they demanded the demolition of a mosque which was under repair on Jan.30.

According to the police, a few men, belonging to the majority community, collected outside the Gulia Wali masjid in Paharganj around 3:30 p.m.

They demanded that the construction work going on in the parapet will be stopped immediately; The laborers were fixing a window in the parapet wall.

When the laborers paid no heed to their demand, the miscreants blocked traffic for more than 10 minutes opposite the busy New Delhi Railway Station.

In the beginning, there were only 10 to 12 people objecting to construction. However, the crowd swelled to more than 3,000 within minutes.

Fearing that the situation may go out of control, the men working at the mosque ran away.
