PATIALA: International Balwinder Singh of the P.S.E.B put up a scintillating performance creating four national records in the three day 23rd Punjab State Powerlifting Championship which concluded here. His record breaking total lift of 7475 kg also eclipsed the Asian record of 660 kg in the 825 ke weight class.
Balwinder who was also adjudged the Strong Man of Punjab lifted 290 kg in squat against the previous best of 265 kg by D.M. Yashant of Karnataka, In bench press, the Punjab boy lifted 170 ke against 160 kg of Rakesh Kumar of Delhi. He improved the dead lift national mark of 285 kg by S.K. Ramamurthi of Karnataka, by lifting 287.5 kg, The total lift measured by Balwinder ‘was better than his own national mark of 692.5 kg.
The PSEB won the State championship with 88 points. Phagwara were runners-up with 54 points:%
The second women powerlifting meet held simultaneously was won by the hosts, Patiala with 36 points. Bathinda district were runners-up with 12 pints. Narinder Kaur of PSEB was declared the Strong Woman of Punjab,
In the men section, Rakesh Kumar of Phagwara created two State records in the 52 kg class and Jagdish Lal also for Phagwara (56 kg class) also set a State record. The other record breaker in the men section was Hussalal of Phagwara (90kg). In the ‘women section record breaking performance was produced by Bindu (44 kg) and Davinder (52 kg) both of Patiala and by Narinder Kaur (60 kg) of PSEB.
