AGRA: Sharing platform with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) general secretary Mayawati, Congress president P.V. Narasimha Rao issued a veiled threat to the United Front government. If the government failed to live up to its promise of implementing the Congress welfare policies and programs, it would not survive, Rao said here last week. Ad dressing a joint election rally of the two parties, he said the BSP Congress alliance for Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, alone could fight the communal and sectarian forces. Assailing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for mixing politics with religion, Rao said people of the state should realize the dangers of sup porting such a party. He regret ted that the most populous state in the country had suffered instability for more than a decade on account of communal strife and tension. He said the BSP Congress combine, if voted to power, could change the face of UP and lead it to prosperity and peace.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting, Mayawati, who is projected as the alliance chief minister, assured a government that would work for the welfare of the state and its people. She also predicted the fall of the UF government within two three months of the state assembly elections and the installation of a dalit as the prime minister of the country. Uttar Pradesh congress committee president Jitendra Prasada warned the people to take care of communal forces creating hurdles in the development of the state. Among those who ad dressed the rally included, BSP supremo Kanshi Ram and former union ministers and Congress leaders Balram Singh Yadav and Salman Khursheed.
