AMRITSAR: The Akali Dal was faced with a serious crisis at the party suspended its deputy leader in parliament Rajdev Singh, after his guard fired in a meeting.
The party also “suspected” the role of its newly appointed patron Baba Joginder Singh Bhindrawale and former head priest of Anandpur Sahib Jathedar Savinder Singh.
The decision to suspend Rajdev Singh for “violating party discipline” was taken at an emergency meeting of the party here.
Announcing this, party spokesman Gurtej Singh said the firing incident at Tikriwal village in Sangrur district of the northern state of Punjab Friday, “amounted to desecration of the holy book Guru Granth Sahib and an attempt on the life of Simranjit Singh.”
Police, however, said reports had indicated that no shot was fired at Mann and nor was the gunman of Rajdev Singh hacked to death by the agitated people.
The gunman, however, had received bruises when he was caught by the people and was progressing at a hospital at Barnala. A case had been registered against him.
Gurtej Singh said the working committee at its emergent meeting here Saturday was of the view that it was a “deep rooted conspiracy” and appointed a three member committee to go into the conduct ‘of Rajdev Singh and his supporters.
It would also probe the role of Baba Joginder Singh.
