NEW DELHI(PTI): The former speaker of the Kerala assembly, Vakkom Purushothaman was recently appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan (presidential residence) communique, the appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge.

Purushothaman was the agriculture minister in Kerala for eight years from 1972. He was also a member of the panel of chairmen in the Lok Sabha when he was elected to the lower house in 1985.
