HISAR: Punjab and Haryana entered the quarterfinals of the men’s section of the 37th National Volleyball Championships being organized here.
While Punjab shocked holders Railways 15-5, 13-15, 15-5, 15-8, Haryana best Jammu and Kashmir 15-2, 15-3, 15-2.
A large holiday crowd at the Mahabir Stadium watched in disbelief as Punjab won the first set 15-5. The Railways team fell in total disarray from the very start of the game; they kept losing their confidence as Punjab scored point after point,
The second set saw a determined Railways team playing much more confidently. They took the first time out at nine each. A while later Punjab followed suit at 12-13. This was followed by another change at 13 each, at the end Railways managed to take the set 13-15,
But that was all the Railways had to offer. They were all at sea against Punjab, who gave a fine display of both attack and defense. Balwant Singh and Dhir Singh of Punjab and Dinesh Kumar of Railways played well. Punjab won the third and fourth sets 15-5, 15-8,
In the women’s section Chandigarh whipped Bihar conceding only one point in three sets. The Bihar women offered no resistance and Chandigarh had only to complete the formalities before declaring winners. The scores were 15-0, 15-1
