CHANDIGARH, India: The Punjab government has ordered an enquiry into the circumstances under which Harpreet Singh; son of State Congress (I) General Secretary Mr. Harcharan Singh Hero was arrested and later released by the court. Mr. Gurbachan Jagat, D.LG. Intelligence has been appointed the enquiry officer. Harpreet Singh was arrested on a charge of harboring freedom fighters when the Amritsar police raided Mr. Jiwan Kumars house near Maleh village in Ferozepur district. A case under antiterrorist act was registered against him but Tarn Taran court in which he was presented was not satisfied.

According to an official spokesman, the police had raided the farm house on a tip that some freedom fighters, including Gurnam Singh involved in the killing of bus passengers near Guru Har Sahai, were hiding there. The police had also said that while the terrorists escaped, Harpreet Singh and one more person were arrested and a case under antiterrorist act was registered against him.
