CHANDIGARH: Punjab assembly speaker Harcharan Singh died here last week after a prolonged illness. He started his career as private secretary to Major Harinder Singh of Rajasansi and a minister in the Ram Kishen ministry. He rose to be a minister in the Giant Zail Singh ministry in 197277 and later became Speaker of the Punjab Assembly during the chief minister ship of Beant Singh.
