President Shriomani Akali Dal

14/4/90

Press Release

The Shiromani Akali Dal is dismayed at the Prime Ministers statement on the 13 April 1990 that he had been informed of plot to assinate him when he visited Punjab. I wish to inform the Prime Minister that it is the same opressive machinery of Rajiv Gandi headed by Mr K P S Gill and Mr S L Kapur which sends much exagerated and preposterous reports to the centre to perpetuate central and undemocratic rule in the Punjab. I have personally briefed the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister that there is no danger to their lives but it is unfortunate that they place very little trust in the popularly elective representatives of the people. As long as the Prime Minister reposes his trust in Mr Rajiv Gandhi, Mr L K Advani and Mr Harkishen Singh Surjit, all of whom have no relevance in the Punjab, Delhi’s Punjab policy will continue to suffer from flaws which will hamper any further improvement.

Our party takes serious exception to Mr Harkishen Singh Surjit’s frontal attack on the Shirmoni Akali Dal. We wish to inform the nation that it was Mr Harkishen Surjit and his communist party which passed the resolution for Khalistan in 1943. Earlier Mr Surjit and his party instigated mutanies in the Sikh regiments and had many Sikh soldiers hanged. Later when Moscow joined Great Britain as an ally in World War II Mr Surjit and his communist party ditched the Sikh soldiers and also deposed against then. After 1947 Mr Surjit and his communist party institaged an armed rebellion against the Indian union in Telanzana. In 1962 when millions of Indians gave their gold ornaments to save India from Chinese aggression and Sikh soldiers were spilling their blood in N.E.F.A. and Ladakh, Mr Surjit and his communist party supported Chinese aggression and openly called India an aggressor. Mr Surjit claims to represent the toiling millions but when he catches a simple cold he goes for treatment to a Moscow hospital. Mr Rajiv Gandhi may holiday in the Andamens or tiger sanctuaries but Mr Surjit recuperates in the health resorts of the black sea in Russia.

Our party wishes to ask the nation to determine whether the Sikhs are patriots or Mr Surjit and his band of communists?
