NEW DELHI: The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) said the press in India was constantly strangulated by various controls and curbs imposed by govt imposes on it, despite all the freedom it enjoyed in reporting news and events. The INS president Mahendra Mohan Gupta, in his presidential address to the 51st annual general meeting of the society here, said the industry had to depend for its vital raw material ‘newsprint’ on the ‘whims and fancies’ of govt. Added to this, wages were also decided by the govt regardless of the capacity to pay and the revenue through advertisement was also decided by the govt, he said.
