VATICAN CITY: Pope John Paul If probably received a transfusion of contaminated blood following the attack on his life 12 years ago, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro, himself a doctor, said on Thursday in a statement on the Pope’s health. A presenter on a private Italian television station astonished viewers late Wednesday by saying that the pontiff had been infected with the cytomegalovirus following a blood transfusion received after the assassination attempt of May 1991.
