JALANDHAR: The CPI(M) Politburo member Harkishan Singh Surjit on Tuesday said he did not expect any political initiative by the Centre to solve the Punjab problem in the near future as Rajiv Gandhi wanted to play the Punjab card in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Surjit told newsmen here that the Prime Minister was not serious about solving the PUnjab tangle. Eyen the State Governor S.S. Ray has now started saying that elections to the State Assembly were not possible till the general elections, Sugjit said.
He said he wondered as to how the State Government was finding the atmosphere conductive to hold the panchayat elections while ex Pressing itself against Assembly elections.
The Cabinet subcommittee set up to solve the Punjab problem could only meet twice once at Chandigarh and once at Delhi during the last eight months, he said.
