NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has said that a petition in the Delhi high court seeking quashing of the Bofors case first information report was filed at the best of “beneficiaries of Swiss accounts” allegedly connected to the Rs 1450 crore Howitzer deal.

In an application moved in the court of Justice M K Chawla, the CBI said “the objective of the present petition is to hamper and delay investigation at the instance of the accused and to prevent the nation from knowing the facts of the Bofors controversy.”

‘The petitioner, Harinder Singh Chaudhary, has sought quashing of the first information report as well as setting aside the order a Delhi special judge who issued the amended letter rogatory to the Swiss authorities for cooperation in uncovering the names of the recipients of the kickbacks.

“The manner in which the petitioner has made personal allegations against the prime minister and senior he petitioner does not have a bonafides case in the matter and wishes to use this petition for ‘ostensibly political purposes”, it said, the case will now come up for hear in a on September 11.
