PANCHKULA: A Punjab Service (PCS) officer was dead and his wife injured by unidentified militants at his residence in Sector 16 here. The deceased R_N.Goyal, was an undersecretary in the Department of Home, Punjab government. His wife, Mrs.Goyal, sustained a bullet injury m the shoulder.

The body of Mr.Goyal was sent to the hospital at Kalka for postmortem. The injured has been admitted to the Post Graduate Institution of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and her condition was stated to be out of danger.

Goyal, who was living alone with his family in a rented home had shifted here about six months ago. It was said that the family had all been receiving threats from militants which had forced Mr.Goyal to leave his own house.

The police suspect involvement by militants as the weapons used included an AK 47. Four police officers, including Superintendent of Police, K.P Singh, reached the spot from the district headquarters, officers of the Chandigarh Police also visited the spot.

Police sources said that militants appear to be more than three in number and of them only two entered the house they find five rounds at Mr.Goyal from a close range and two of them hit the wall. Goyal died on the spot.

The deceased along with his family was witnessing a TV program in the drawing room when one of the assailants gave a ring. As Mrs.Kusum opened the door, they asked for Mr.Goyal on the plea that “Mehta” had sent sweets for him. As Mrs. Kusam refused to accept the sweets saying that she did not know any Mehta, the assailants asked her to send Mr.Goyal as he knew Mehta.

In the meantime, Mr.Goyal came out of the room and the assailants opened fire on him from a close range killing him on the spot His wife, who also received a ballet injury rushed inside the drawing room.
