A provision of rupees two crores has been made in the railway budget for 198687 for the construction of the Nangal-Talwara broad gauge railway line.

  1. Two other railway lines—Jammu Tawi Ushanpur and Delhi Bhatinda bypass have been allotted Rs, 1.50 crores and Rs, 1.73 crores respectively.
  2. The ban on the recruitment to services in Punjab imposed a few years ago as a measure of economy, has been withdrawn,
  3. Farm output in Punjab is likely to be seriously affected if the recent increase in the price of fertilizers and petroleum products is not withdrawn immediately.

Excise duty on colour television increased from Rs. 900 to Rs. 1500 per set exceeding 36 cm screens.

Custom duty on fuel efficient cars and components will go up from 15 to 20 percent.

Duty on air conditioners increased.

‘Standard deduction for income tax raised from Rs. 6000 to Rs. 10,000 for salaried classes,

Basic exemption limit for gift tax raised from Rs, 5000 to 20,000.

  1. Mr. Balwant Singh Premi, a prominent Dhadi singer, was shot at and wounded by unidentified persons at his residence. His condition is stated to be serious.
