WASHINGTON : Federal aviation officials announced Monday that they have directed domestic airlines to carry out emergency inspections of Boeing 747s following discovery of cracks in the frames of the jumbo jets.
‘The Federal Aviation Administration said it issued the emergency airworthiness directive after receiving reports of four instances in which the aircraft frames were found to have sustained cracks.
The FAA said the cracks were found in the forward part of two jumbo jets used in transoceanic travel.
One of the planes, belonging to Pan American World Airways, ‘was found to have three cracks, officials said, while the other plane, a British carrier, had a single crack,
