EXTENSION FOR RIBEIRO

Mr. J.F. Ribeiro, Director General of Police, Punjab, is likely to be given an extension by the Union Government. He is due to retire in May.

SEMINAR FOR AUTONOMY

A two day seminar on “Social and Political Tensions in India” concluded at Amritsar with a unanimous note that unless the States were given more autonomy, economic independence, these tensions would persist. The Center must decentralize its powers and remove economic disparities to lessen the tensions.

UAD WARN GOVERNMENT

The Unified Akali Dal warned the government that by sending the security forces in gurdwaras, it was not only perpetuating extremism but also perpetuating the existing situation in Punjab.

NEW FOREIGN EXHANGE RULES

Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi announced relaxation of the country’s foreign exchange rules. Exchange may be released up to $7500 per patient for medical treatment. Several other relaxations have also been announced.
