STORNOWAY, Hebrides. A French trawler sank in stormy North Atlantic seas between Scotland and Iceland early Friday. Rescue officials recovered three bodies and at least 15 other people ‘were missing and feared drowned.

“Chances for their survival are rapidly diminishing,” a spokesman for the rescuers said. “It would be surprising if we found any more survivors.”

Gale-whipped sleet and snow hampered rescue attempts, but nine survivors were picked up by other vessels in the area.

‘The death toll was believed to include a crewman from a rescue vessel, who went overboard while trying to help the stricken trawler the 640 ton Dieppe-registered Sneaker Arctic.

The trawler, which was carrying 25 crew members and! One passenger went down in stormy seas 360 miles west of the Outer Hebrides and equal distance southeast of Keflavik, Iceland. ‘The couple has visas for Austria and Israel, but would like to immigrate to the United States, he said.
