GENEVA: Saudi Arabian oil minister Sheik Ahmed Zaki Yamani began preliminary talks

Friday preparation for OPEC’s crisis conference next week on cutting production to reverse slumping prices .Yamani and Kuwaiti minister Ali Khalifa Al-Sabah were the first to arrive for the conference starting Monday — the fourth in five months convened by the 13-member Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

OPEC officials said Yamani and Khalifa and other ministers were holding informal consultations as soon as they arrived.

Although members generally agree that sharp output cuts must be enforced to reduce supply and thus boost prices, industry analysts as well as many OPEC sources see little likelihood of agreement in Geneva.

There is wide disagreement over who should cut back and by how much.

ROME: Three elegantly dressed robbers stole an estimated $1.3 million in banknotes Friday from a bank near the Piazza Venezia in the heart of Rome.

Police said investigation indicated the bandits, armed with pistols, used a Key to enter a rear entrance of the National Bank of Agriculture, They forced an employee to open the vault and then hit him on the head with a pistol butt.

A woman told police she saw three well-dressed men leave the rear entrance in a narrow side street with a heavy sack in midmorning. The street is only a block from the busy piazza venezia.

AHMEDABAD, India: Outbreak of gastroenteritis has claimed 15 lives and another 5000 people are suffering from the disease, officials said .They said the epidemic in the Naroda area of the Ahmedabad, 900 miles southwest of New Delhi, was due to contamination of drinking water supplied through a pipeline which had become porous, allowing sewage to enter.

The officials said 15 people. Mostly children, had died of the disease in a 24-hour period since Thursday and 200 were hospitalized, But they said the death toll could be much higher as disease had spread rapidly.

Another 5000 people, 10 percent of the population of the area, were suffering in varying degrees from gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines, the officials said, TAIPEI, Taiwan: A professor married to the grandson of China’s last emperor was killed and her body found buried at a hot-spring resort near Taipei Friday, police reported.

The body of Yao Chao-min, 52, professor of fine arts of the University of Chinese Culture, was dug out of a hill behind Peitou, a hot spring spa six miles north of Taipei, police said. A coroner reported finding no visible injury to the body, they said.

Police said Yao lived alone in her home at Peitou. Her husband, Pu hsiao-hua, is paralyzed and has been hospitalized for years.

Police said Yao was apparently slain but no clues on the crime have been found,

MOSCOW: Uruguayan Foreign Minister Enrique Iglesias met Friday with his Soviet counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze for talks on international and regional issues, Radio Moscow said

He later met in the Kremlin with President Andrei Gromyko to discuss matters of mutual concern, the official Tass news agency said.
