NEW DELHI, Nov. 17, Reuter: An Avalanche hit a major highway in the north Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 36 people and trapping hundreds of others, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said today. The news agency said the dead included road workers and soldiers from an army rescue team trying to assist travellers trapped when the avalanche struck the road between Leh and the state capital Sri Nagar.

Heavy snow and high winds were hampering rescue efforts, PTI said
