NEW DELHI: In an uncharacteristically assertive have, Narayan Dutt Tiwari resigned from the president ship of the UPCC on Sept.26 to prepare for withdrawal of Congress support to the Mulayam ministry but his resignation has not been accepted by the Congress President P.V.Narasima Rao, intensifying the battle nerves between the two leaders.

The Prime Minister is understood to have sent word to Tiwari to come here for detailed consultations and the UP leader has agreed. He is expected here in a couple of days, till then no decision is expected to be taken on the resignation to the SPBJP ministry, catching the party High Command by surprise, Tewari is keeping up the pressure on the High Committee to ensure that the issue of the withdrawal of support to the Mulayam Singh government is not put on the back bumer, The Prime Minister on the other hand had been trying to defuse the situation.

In his resignation note faxed to the Prime Minister on Monday, Tewari told Rao that he was putting in his papers because he had not been able to fulfill the aspirations of party men with regard to their decision to withdrawal support to the 10monthold ministry in Luck now. During the last days, a large number of party men in UP have rallied behind Tiwari. For the first time in three years they see hopes for reviving the Congress in the state, ‘The resignation move has brought the focus back to UP.
