JALANDHAR: The ruling Congress party retained the Nakodar assembly seat as candidate Amarjit Singh Samra defeated his nearest rival Kuldip Singh Wadala of Akali Dal (B) by a margin of 5210 votes. Samra polled 37526 Votes as against 32316 votes of Wadala Singhara Singh of CPI (M) is the only candidates who could retain his deposit by getting 5995 votes.

Samra in fact took the lead from the first round of counting and maintained \he lead till the counting was completed.

With the victory Congress has won nine of the 12 assembly elections held in Nakodar since 1952. The only time an Akali won from Nakodar was in 1985 when Wadala had defeated his cousin Umrao Singh by 728 votes.
