ISLAMABAD: Sindh Coordination minister Syed Muzzafar Husain Shah was Friday unanimously elected chief minister of Pakistan’s southern province, thus ending the political uncertainly following the death of Sindh chief minister Jam Sadiq Ali.

“The special session of the Sindh assembly, summoned by governor Mahmoud a Haroon, adopted several resolutions saying the 47yrold Muzzafar Hussain Shah had the confidence of majority of members of the house.

Twenty nine opposition members present in the assembly did ‘not oppose the resolutions which were passed by a voice vote, Radio Pakistan reported,

Immediately before the assembly met, the Jam Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM) coalition ‘members had a meeting in which Muzzafar Hussain Shah was elected the new leader. It was attended by a majority of members of the coalition.

Muzzafar Hussain Shah, who was elected to the Sindh assembly in the October 1990 elections after the fall of the Benazir Bhutto government, was given the charge of coordinating the affairs of the ‘Sindh administration during the illness of Jam Sadiq Ali

Heading a four member coordination committee, Muzzafar Hussain Shah was presiding over ‘cabinet meeting and was described as the defect o’ chief minister.

‘The candidature of Muzzafar Hussain Shah, who was the parliamentary affairs and law minister in the Jam Sadiq Ali government, is understood to have been approved by president Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Prime Minister Nawaz. Sharif and army chief Gen Asif’ Nawaz Janjua when they went to Sindh to attend the funeral of Jam Sadiq Ali on Thursday.
