NEW DELHI: Heavy monsoon rains lashing the north India since Saturday night claimed one life and resulted in injuries to five others while the mercury fell considerably bringing welcome relief to the people reeling under sweltering heat.

In Amritsar a police head constable was electrocuted when he came in contact with some live wires that had fallen due to the rains.

Five persons were injured in a house collapse in Kathu town in the border state of Jammu and Kashmir; the condition of some of them is reported to be serious.

In Delhi moderate to heavy rains in the morning affected vehicular traffic in some areas.

The rains brought respite to people from sweltering heat which had gripped the region for over a month and claimed nearly 32 lives due to sun stroke.
