CHANDIGARH: newly elected member of the lower house ‘of parliament and a member of the Legislative assembly of the rouble tom north Indian state of Punjab on March 13 escaped unhurt in a militant attack.

Surinder Singh Kairon, Congress (I) MP from Tarn Taran and ‘Sardool Singh, Congress-I MLA from Jandiala escaped attempts ‘on their lives while four persons were injured when militants lobbed two stick grenades at a Local cinema house in Amritsar Friday night.

‘While Kairon had left he cinema house a few minutes before the attack, Sardool Singh was present in a room of the building along with his security men and party worker.

The grenades failed to penetrate the room where Sardool Singh ‘was staying and exploded in the ‘crowd of his gunmen and associates injuring four persons.

Elsewhere in Punjab, 19 persons were killed in stepped up militant violence since Thursday night.

Militant shot dead three persons in village Kotli Sajjavar in Bhogpur police station area of Jalandhar district.

‘Six militants and one army personnel were killed in an encounter near village Kakrali in Ropar district.

Two militants were killed in an exchange of ire with security men, when militants attacked a police party carrying under vials to village Masania in Batala district for recovery of arms.

A militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces near village Atar Singh Wall in Bhatinda district,

Police picked up bullet-riddled bodies of Constable Baljinder Singh and home guard Gurmit ‘Singh near Kurali in Ropar district.

In the same district, two militants ‘went to liquor vend in Morinda and shot dead two persons and wounded two others.

In Sangrur, militants killed one Gurbax Singh village Lehara and Hardev Singh in village Mangewal
