ISLAMABAD (PTI): Mohajir Quami movement chairman Azim Ahmad Tariq has been sent to jail after he surrendered himself before a Karachi special court for suppression of militant activities on March 18.

Tariq, who had gone underground after the start of the army operation in Sindh in May last year, had surfaced on November 28.

The reports said that although the special court had issued non-bailable warrants against him, the police never proceeded with their execution. Tariq himself thought fit to surrender. A bail application, moved on his behalf, would be heard on April 11.

Soon after coming out of hiding, Tariq lost confidence of the MOM founder, Altaf Hussain, now based in London. Hussain had abdicated as the MQM supremo in December, citing health grounds but now has apparently started directing MOM affairs.

Tariq had two days ago transferred the responsibilities of reorganizing the MOM to a new 12member coordination committee, headed by Senator Ishtiaq Azhar, a close associate of Altaf Hussain. Reports said that the committee had been appointed by Altaf Hussain.

In a pre-surrender statement, Tariq said despite working under tremendous odds, he had succeeded in securing the release of hundreds of MQM workers, detained during the army operation.
