NEW DELHI,(PTI): Chiman bhai Mehta, a dissident Janata Dal leader, known to be close to the breakaway Ajit Singh faction, resigned from the National Executive of the party.

Earlier, Mehta had walked out of the National executive meeting here complaining that he was “not allowed to speak.”

The Janata Dal secretariat here confirmed having received Mehta’s resignation letter.

Party sources indicated Mehta might soon be expelled from the primary membership of the party for his alleged anti-party activities.

In a letter to JD president S.R. Bommai, Mehta expressed his resentment over what he called the procedure and approach adopted by the party leadership toward SC and ST candidates.

Mehta alleged that he was not given an opportunity to speak at the JD national executive meeting before the meeting adopted a resolution on fielding a presidential candidate. He said JD leaders were in tolerant of views expressed by others at the party forum.
