MADRID: Unhappy Diego Maradona is ready to hang up his boots. The South American superstar, unsettled at Italian club Napoli and under increasing pressure from a hostile Italian Press, told a Spanish television programme that he wanted to quit professional football.

”I  have nothing left to prove in football and I no longer have the will to fight my critics,” said Maradona, who was interviewed by former Argentine World Cup teammate Jorge Valdano.

Referring to the “anti Maradonna campaign” in the Italian Press this season, the South American forward said, “if the journalists write bad things about me, they get awarded the equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize.”

I am tired of the situation. I prefer to get out of football altogether and play with my daughter at home rather than continue.
