Chandigarh: Punjab government has ordered promotions and transfers of senior police officers in the State to overhaul the administration, Mr. P.N, Lekhi, Senior S.P. Amritsar has been shifted to Chandigarh and in his place Mr. S.S, Virk S.P. Jalandhar has been posted. Mr. Azhar Alam S.P. Ropar goes to Jalandhar in place of Virk and Mr. Anil Kaushal from Chan digarh has been posted to Ropar. S. Baljit Singh Bhaur goes as S.S.P Faridkot in place of S. Gurbinder Singh Bhullar who has been promoted as D.I.G. Jalandhar Range. There has been considerable controversy over Mr. Bhullar because of the charge that he was responsible for killing 9 persons at Chowk Mehta with his own stengun at the time Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale was arrested. He was later exonerated by the commission of enquiry over the Chowk Mehta Tragedy. While two other senior officers of the state have been transferred, Mr. Ohri takes over D.1.G. Security and Mr. Gurbachan Jagat is new D.LG. Intelligence. More transfers are also in the offing. Political circles in the state are surprised that State government has not decided the promotion cases of S. Jarnail Singh Chahal, S.S.S. Bhullar and S. Sarbjit Singh as all the three officers were given unimportant assignments by the Congress rulers because of their sympathies with the Akali Dal.
