Major Bakhtawar Singh Khera, 86, passed away peacefully on July 2, 1996 in August a, Georgia. Akhand Path bhog and Kirtan was held on July 7, 96 attended by a large gathering from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Dr. Malkit Singh Guram and Brigadier Baldev Bath paid glowing tributes to the departed soul.
Major Khera was Commissioned as 2/Lieut in 1941 in Corps of Engineers, called Bengal Sappers and Miners those days. He saw action against the Japanese in Malaya and was taken Prisoner of War at Singapore, where he later joined the Indian National Army under the direction of Subhash Bose and Gen. Mohan Singh. He fought against the British Indian Forces on Burma front where he was captured and later tried at the Red Fort. He was cashiered from the Indian Amy.
Major Khera and his wife Mrs. Kartar Kaur immigrated to USA in 1988 to join his children. He has been very active in Social and Religions affairs and was the chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Augusta. Major Khera’s family likes to convey sincere thanks to Sadh Sangat for sympathies expressed and for joining the prayers at the Gurdwara.
