COLOMBO: Tamil guerrillas of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam kidnapped 18 businessmen participant in a religious ceremony at Kali Amma temple at Kalawanchikudi in the caster Batticaloa Wednesday,

Saturdays issue of “The Island” quoting Baitcalos police said, the LTTE was alleged to have demanded a ransom of R.s 3.6 million for the release the businessmen, many of whom are supposed to be millionaires who had refused extension payments demanded by the Tigers.

The newspaper said there were reports of exchange of fire between the Tigers and the police personnel manning a check point near Batticaloa railway station. None was injured in the shootout.
