OTTAWA: ‘The Liberals won ‘task for the expulsion of two Canadians serving 28year prison terms in Brazil, Foreign Affairs Minister Andre Ouellette said.

Instead, Ouellette said the government will continue to push for the ratification of a prisoner exchange treaty that would allow Christine Lamont and David Spencer to serve the rest of their sentences in Canada.

Lamont of Langley, B.C., and Spencer, of Moncton, N.B., have spent the past four years in a Sao Paulo prison for their part in the kidnapping of Brazilian millionaire Abilio Diniz in December 1989. The couple, backed by their families and church groups, maintains they are innocent and want an expulsion that would set them free. The families pushed the former Conservative government to pursue an expulsion, insisting the Brazilian government would abide by Canada’s request if asked. But Ouellette mists the exchange treaty, which has been passed by the Brazilian government but still awaits ratification by the country’s presi.
