Lausanne: Carl Lewis won the 200 meters in the year’s fastest time and finished second in the 100.yesterday at the Athictissimal AAF-Grand Prix meet in Lausanne, Switzerland. In winning the 200 in 19.99 seconds, Lewis beat a field that included the 1991 world champion, Michael Johnson, and the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, Mike Marsh, Johnson finished second in 20.06, and Marsh, the American record holder al 19.73 who beat Lewis at last month’s United States championships, was fifth in 20.26. Andre Cason beat Lewis in the 100, finishing in 10.04. He edges Lewis by .03 seconds.

The Olympic champion, Linford Christie of Britain, withdrew from the 100, Meet officials said he had a back problem, but his agent said that Christie would face Cason in Oslo on Saturday

 

In the 400meter hurdles, the Olympic champion and world record holder, Kevin Young, was unchallenged and improved his season’s best lo 47,37, the fastest in the world, The United States and Olympic champion, Gail Devers, set the year’s best in the women’s 100, winning easily in 10.82.

A Kenyan teenager, Ismael Kimui, set the years best in the men’s 5,000, clocking 13:06, 72. Johnny Gray of the United States did the same in the 800, winning in 1:44.27.
