Dear Sir,

Ina letter published in India Abroad, New York (Dec. 20) Ritu Mehta contradicts Kuldip Nayar about the discrimination against Moslems in securing jobs in India, She writes “This is again false Even the Moslems have admitted that the system in India is more than fair” She continues, “Moslems are and have been holding important ‘and influential ministerial and executive positions in state government as well as the Central govt.”

This is probably untrue.

‘Syed Shahabud Din, a foreign Service officer, who gave up a brilliant career publishes the following statistics in a monthly journal of ‘reference, research and documentation – Muslim India’ as it stood in the beginning of 1981 when the Moslem population in India was 11%:

(PRANAY GUPTE IN ‘VENGEANCE’ – p. 195)

Thus, out of the above 4 categories of important and influential positions in the country, Moslems held only 2.4% of the posts against a population of 11%, This is not a share proportionate to the Moslem population in the country.

Further, 2 random survey of senior Moslem employees in the private sector did not sound very encouraging either. Ponds India Limited | out of 115, D.C.M. 2 out of 987, Brooke Bond 1% out of 673, ITC 17 out of 966, J.K, Synthetics 5 out of 536, Ambalal Sarabhai 5 out of 628” (M.J. Akbar in “India-the siege within” p. 310) This is how minorities are being treated in India.

Is this a typical example of Indian secularism or are the Moslems of India being punished for having supported Pakistan, [leave it to your readers to judge.

Dec. 23, 1985

Sincerely Amarjit Singh Buttar
