Sir,

Gopal Singh passed away on August 8, 1990 as a result of massive heart attack in New Delhi (WSN 8.17.90).

It was reported in certain sections of the press that he was an eminent poet, writer, philosopher and was credited, among others, with the English translation of “Guru Granth Sahib”, (Although it is believed that the true author of the translation is Late S. Kapur Singh I.C.S., but due to Government of India’s anti Kapur Singh stance he was advised to give the authorship over to Gopal Singh since he was viewed favorably by the Government of India, it would be published by UNESCO among others, and it was).

A mention was also made by various diplomatic assignments of Gopal Singh besides his nominations to Rajya Sabha and minorities’ commission, etc.

Most conspicuous by its absence is the mention of his breach of trust when famous and popular Akali leader Giani Kartar Singh dispatched Gopal Singh to deliver to Mr. Mohammed Ali Jinnah a message concerning the issue of Sikh Homeland during negotiations for the partition of India in 1947, Rather than deliver it to Mr Jinnah, he delivered it to Mr Nehru. It was this betrayal of Gopal Singh for which He was handsomely rewarded after India’s partition with all of the aforementioned assignments which also included governorship of Goa and Nagaland,

Gopal Singh’s anti-Sikh role at the direction of his Hindu masters in Delhi in the 80’s during Dharam Yudh Morcha deserves vehement condemnation to say the least, when he started distorting facts of Sikh religious history and tradition about which he had earlier written objectively and truthfully.
