AMRITSAR: The SGPC detained President, Mr. Gurcharan Singh Tohra, on April 21 has constituted a seven member lawyers committee to defend Mr, Simranjit Singh Mann and three others charged with a “conspiracy to kill Mrs, Indira Gandhi.
Although Mr. Parkash Singh Badal is to head the committee in his absence a former Advocate General of Punjab Mr Ajit Singh Sarhadi will head the committee comprisingGurdashan Singh Grewal. Hardev Singh Mattenangal, Gurinder Singh Dhillon, Puran Singh Hundal and Mr, Gur Rattan Singh, all Lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
This was today stated by the SGPC Secretary Manjit Singh Calcutta after a meeting with Tohra at the canal rest house, Khalra 50 km from here, where the latter is detained.
The lawyers committee is a follow up on the SGPC Executive resolution adopted on Wednesday which he extended full political and legal support to Mr. Mann, Mr. Atinderpal Singh, Mr. Dalip Singh and Mr. Jagmohan Singh who have all been indicated by the Special Investigation Team constituted as a follow up on the Thakkar Commission report.
Mr. Manjit Singh said the defense committee will have its office
at Chandigarh and work independently with the cooperation of Sikhs as a whole and other eminent lawyers of the Supreme Court if need be.
He appealed to every Sikh to contribute just Rs 1 each for meeting the expenses to be incurred on the defense of the four.
