COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan parliament Thursday defeated a motion of no-confidence against speaker M.H. Mohammed, signifying as set back to the disses the ruling national party of President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

 The motion was defeated by 85 votes in favor and 123 against, after a marathon 12-hour debate marked by acrimonious exchanges between the opposition and the ruling party.

The dominant opposition Sri Lanka freedom party of former premier Sirmiavo Bandarnaike, had moved the motion of no confidence against the speaker following his rejection of the resolution of impeachment of president premedasa.
